I Didn’t Know You Could Make Birthday Cake from Scratch is the book for every parent who ever stuck a candle in a peanut butter sandwich and called it birthday cake. Or ever tried to crowd source her child’s braces. Or ever told her child to shut up and be quiet so she could finish reading a parenting magazine. It’s the little book of big parenting blunders, from cradle to empty nest, that will make other moms and dads feel really good about themselves.

I Didn't Know You Could Make Birthday Cake from Scratch Parenting Blunders from Cradle to Empty Nest Dorothy Rosby Sage Stossel 9780692672136 Books

Dorothy Rosby has written a brilliantly funny book about being a parent in today's world. Not only parents, but anyone who has ever been near children or who remembers being a child can laugh until the tears come down when reading this book. I would say that Ms. Rosby is the new Erma Bombeck, but I'd rather say that she is the ORIGINAL Dorothy Rosby. At any rate, she is very entertaining.

By the way, when I was a kid we usually made birthday cakes from cake mixes. We could make them from scratch back then, but it was too much trouble.

I Didn't Know You Could Make Birthday Cake from Scratch Parenting Blunders from Cradle to Empty Nest Dorothy Rosby Sage Stossel 9780692672136 Books Reviews

Dorothy Rosby’s I Didn’t Know You Could Make Birthday Cake from Scratch is a true treasure. This collection of essays about her only son is full of humor and emotion. Rosby gives us background on her life as the ninth of ten children and how her son’s growing up as an only child compares to her own upbringing. Although some of my favorite essays came towards the end of the book including such topics as being the “finder in chief” of her her own home, and “nonsense and momsense” when her own son quotes her to her own detriment, the entire collection dishes up the sunny and brutally honest side of parenting. The fact that she writes the collection by topic instead of by age chronology adds to the charm of this lovely book. Great to read at home or in the car while waiting in the carpool line. Either way, this is one must read book.
I've always loved her columns and now I love this book! Her quick wit funny jabs make you truly LOL. I have two teenage daughters and a 7-month-old son. I love how she writes about Isaac and really hope her stories about her son aren't just big fish stories. (See what I did there?) Read the book then you'll get the joke.
They make me look forward to the fun ahead with my son, having confidently learned from Dorothy's funny mishaps.
This book was an absolutely delightful romp through the trials and tribulations of dealing with a young child on a day to day basis. It evoked plenty my own memories and experiences with regard to raising my son and even about being a child myself. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing and when it's mixed with humor it's even better. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to laugh!
Dorothy's book is proudly displayed on my shelf along with books by Dave Barry and Erma Bombeck for a reason she is a truly great writer who can make readers laugh about and relate to the absurdities of parenting, marriage and family life, without resorting to profanity or snark. That's why this book makes a great gift for new parents. What I like most about Dorothy's stories is that they are real, but she puts her own hilarious spin on them to show us how to make fun of our foibles. I have met Dorothy Rosby at many writers' conferences, and I've seen her do stand up -- she is an accomplished humorist, but also a humble, gracious, hard-working writer who deserves every success!
I have known Dorothy for over 10 years. I always know that she is kind, sincere, loving, considerate, and funny. But I didn't know that she was THIS FUNNY! I picked up the book from her book signing at our local bookstore and was afraid I would love her less after I read her book, but it never happened. Both my husband and I love reading it!

Dorothy is not trying to be funny, she seem to be simply honest in her writing, yet if you are a parent, you'll relate to her stories, laugh with "her" and feel instantly better about all the mistakes you made in the past. I know I did. Even if you are not a parent, you'll still laugh and maybe start to understand some weird parents/kids you see every day.

Oh, my husband thinks the picture for Dorothy is a good one. I agree. You'll find the real Dorothy does look very much like the picture. If you have ever met authors in person, you know what I mean. )
Dorothy tells all those experiences from my life that I forgot to write down. She is a fabulous storyteller who brings up memories that are humorous & too good to be forgotten. Thank you for offering this book in a variety of formats. I love it!
This is what Erma Bombeck would write if she were alive today (and younger). In fact, as you read Dorothy Rosby’s hilarious, insightful book, you may recall Yogi Berra’s famous quote, “It’s like déjà vu, all over again.”

Syndicated humor columnist Dorothy Rosby tackles all the tough subjects in chapters such as Will Sweetiekins Give the Steak Knifey Back to Daddy?, Pets Teach Responsibility—to Parents, Keep Your Kids Enthused about School and You Enthused about Your Kids, Hot Dish a la King Again? The laughs just never stop.

If you miss Erma, you need this book. If you need to find the humor in family life, you need this book. You need this book.
